The war to end all wars.
Biochemical weapons had become the best and most effective way to quickly wipe out enemies, but some scientists went too far...
They managed to create a parasite, one that could easily survive anywhere, attached only to humans, and multiplied like crazy. Before testing even, the parasite managed to break free and contaminate Mexico faster than anything the world has ever seen.
The effects of the parasite were devastating. It left humans incapable of more intelligent thought than neanderthals, leaving many confused and violent. Cities burned, many died, and society was left in ruins.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, many were left unharmed. For some people the parasite couldn't attach itself to their brain and turn it to mush, and some of the luckier ones managed to evade it altogether(but mostly died out within a few years).
Those who are left are multiplying, and in the decade since the devastation have multiplied and begun to rebuild society once again.
